Maquettes

When creating large format sculptures, it can be quite labor intensive and expensive for a working artist to bring to life the imaginative concepts he or she dreams up. In commissioned art, showing a potential client what the artist intends to create for them has always been difficult. A maquette, is a small scale model / rough draft of the proposed sculpture. It is used to test shapes and ideas without incurring the huge cost and time consuming effort of producing a full-scale product. For commissioned metal sculptures, the maquette can be used to show a client how the finished work will fit within a proposed site.

In the above photo, metal artist John Martin Streeby is welding together the various elements of a proposed metal sculpture.  The small scale maquette brings to life the vision of the artist, in miniature.

The following images feature one of John Martin Streeby’s metal sculptures. The proof-of-concept maquette is on the left. The final sculpture is featured at the grand entrance of View 202, a modern American restaurant located in the heart of Redding, California, overlooking the Sacramento River.

Over the years John Martin Streeby has brought to life creative designs that capture the essence of his creative talents. A few are still looking for a sponsor to come to life in all their full size glory. Click on any thumbnail to view a slideshow of the maquettes.
